Winter Rye + Chicory Blend — 60% Winter Rye / 40% Chicory
Cold-Hardy Forage & Soil-Building Cover Crop Mix

Our Winter Rye + Chicory Blend combines the robust, deep-soil benefits of cereal rye with the nutrient-dense, palatable forage of premium chicory for a dual-purpose cover crop and forage solution.

  • Winter Rye (60%) serves as a fast-establishing, cold-tolerant grass that germinates quickly in cool soils, providing exceptional erosion control, soil structure improvement, and weed suppression. Its extensive root system enhances soil aeration and scavenges residual nitrogen, making it ideal for fall planting in northern climates. Winter Rye acts as a natural soil conditioner, breaking compaction and boosting organic matter when terminated in spring.

  • Chicory (40%), a deep-rooted perennial broadleaf, complements rye by accessing deeper soil nutrients and improving overall forage quality. Chicory is renowned for its high mineral content — particularly calcium, magnesium, zinc, and potassium — promoting animal health when used in grazing systems. With its natural anthelmintic (deworming) properties, chicory supports rotational grazing programs and livestock vitality. It remains palatable throughout the growing season and withstands moderate grazing pressure.

Together, this mix offers:

  • Extended Grazing Opportunities — Winter Rye provides fall and early spring grazing, while Chicory extends forage availability into summer.

  • Soil Regeneration & Weed Suppression — Dual root structures optimize soil health, suppress broadleaf and grassy weeds, and enhance nutrient cycling.

  • Versatile Applications — Suitable for fall cover cropping, spring soil building, rotational grazing, and wildlife forage plots.
