The 1-2-2 ratio supports this by prioritizing root and stem development over excessive leaf production that could make vines top-heavy.

Climbing plants face unique mechanical challenges—they must support their own weight while extending toward light, often at considerable distances from their root systems. Phosphorus supports the development of extensive root systems that anchor climbing plants and fuel their growth. Potassium strengthens cell walls in stems and tendrils, providing the structural integrity needed for climbing. Moderate nitrogen produces leaves for photosynthesis without creating the soft, heavy growth that causes climbers to collapse.
