Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Growth Tubers & Rhizomes Fertilizer

Product Overview

Description

Wicked Growth Tubers & Rhizomes Fertilizer is specifically formulated for underground storage organs that need strong phosphorus and potassium support without excessive nitrogen that promotes foliage over tuber development. The 5-10-10 ratio directs plant energy underground.

Tubers and rhizomes store starches, sugars, and nutrients underground for future growth. They need phosphorus for storage organ initiation and cell division, potassium for starch synthesis and disease resistance, but only modest nitrogen to prevent excess top growth at the expense of harvest quality.

Perfect for potatoes, sweet potatoes, ginger, turmeric, and ornamental tubers like dahlias and cannas. Also excellent for rhizomatous plants including iris, calla lilies, and ornamental gingers.

Highlights

• Tuber-building P-K emphasis
• Low N prevents excess foliage
• Improves storage organ size
• Enhanced starch content
• All tuber & rhizome types

The Science Behind It

How It Works

This formula addresses the specific needs of plants that store energy in underground structures—tubers, rhizomes, corms, and bulbs. Moderate nitrogen supports necessary leaf growth for photosynthesis, while elevated phosphorus drives root and storage organ development. High potassium supports starch accumulation and storage organ quality. Applied before or during active growth, nutrients support both the current season's foliage and the development of next year's storage structures.

The Science

Tubers and rhizomes serve as carbohydrate storage organs, requiring specific nutrient balances for optimal development. Phosphorus supports the ATP-dependent processes of starch synthesis and transport to storage tissues. Potassium activates starch synthase enzymes and regulates the movement of sugars from leaves to storage organs. Lower nitrogen prevents excessive top growth that can delay tuber initiation and reduce storage organ size by competing for photosynthates.

Nutrients Available

5% Total Nitrogen – Supports foliage for photosynthesis without excessive top growth. 10% Available Phosphate (P₂O₅) – Powers storage organ development and carbohydrate transport. 10% Soluble Potash (K₂O) – Enhances starch accumulation, tuber size, and storage quality. Ideal for potatoes, dahlias, cannas, ginger, iris, and all tuberous plants.

How to Apply

1-2 lbs/100 sq ft every 4-6 weeks. Severe deficiency: 2-3 lbs initially.

1

Action:

Survey garden bed and note deficiency symptoms. Map high-need zones.

Pro Tip:

Sandy areas and fruiting sections need more K than shaded areas.

Avoid:

Don't leave granules on surface in hot weather - damages plants.

2

Action:

Calculate 1-2 lbs per 100 sq ft. For 10x20 garden (200 sq ft), use 2-4 lbs.

Pro Tip:

Weigh fertilizer on kitchen scale. One cup 0-0-60 weighs ~0.5 lb.

Avoid:

Don't exceed 2 lbs per 100 sq ft per application. Split heavy doses.

3

Action

Broadcast granules evenly across soil surface. Work into top 2-3 inches with cultivator.

Pro Tip:

Sandy areas and fruiting sections need more K than shaded areas.

Avoid:

Don't spread on windy days - granules drift causing uneven application.

4

Action

Water thoroughly with 1-2 inches to dissolve granules and move K into root zone.

Pro Tip:

Incorporation prevents salt buildup and gets K to roots faster.

Avoid:

Don't leave granules on surface in hot weather - damages plants.

Key Benefits

Maximum Tuber Development – High phosphorus and potassium direct energy into storage organs rather than excessive foliage for larger harvests.

Improved Starch & Sugar Content – Potassium drives starch synthesis, improving flavor and storage quality in edible tubers.

Disease Resistance – Strong potassium levels reduce susceptibility to storage rots, scab, and other tuber diseases.

Ornamental Excellence – Supports large, healthy tubers and rhizomes in dahlias, cannas, iris, and other ornamental bulb-forming plants.
